I found a green Mega Rayquaza coin!

I was at Target with my mom yesterday picking up a few groceries. When we got to the checkout, I saw a Pokemon card pack that had a green Mega Rayquaza coin and I just had to get it!!!

So cool! Right?!
This is everything in the pack. Usually I get a bunch of doubles, but this time I got 9 new cards! Not bad :)

Happy Catching!

ToyFair2016 - Pokemon Trading Cards

I just started collecting Pokemon cards so when I went to ToyFair in New York City, I headed straight for booth 646...
Because that was the booth for "The Pokemon Company International" were you could find Pokemon Trading cards.
And they have some cool new stuff!
Like these Mythical Pokemon Collection cards which are going to be very rare!!!
The representative said you will not see a lot of people with this kind of card.
Then I saw these XY-Break Through and XY-Break Point cards and wondered what was the difference...
The XY-Break Point cards collection has over 120 cards.
We got a 10 pack of cards ...
Which included a trainer, one foil card and one photo card.

The Xy-Break Through card collection has over 160 cards.

I got a 10 card pack...
With a special energy card and a Marowak Break card... So I don't really see a difference between the XY-Break Point and the XY-Break Through besides the size of their collections. But, I love Pokemon Cards and I can't wait to get more.

R2-D2 Deco Light... Awesomeness!!!

When I came home, my dad surprised me with the R2-D2 deco light from Target.  I was super happy because I love Star Wars!!! ....I even have four different light sabers!!! Which I'll be happy to talk about later, but right now I'm talking about the R2-D2 deco light.

It comes with a large sticker that looks like a crack in the wall , half of R2-D2 and the needed screws. It is super easy to put on the wall .... About 15 minutes if you're trying to be neat with the sticker. There  are two lights and a timer on the side. It is pretty much a giant night light that runs on batteries. But it's only the coolest night light EVER!... for only $19.99... Well, I guess that is kind of pricey for a night light... But it is SO COOL!!!... and the perfect addition to any Star Wars bedroom!

Happy Collecting :)

Star Wars R2-D2 Rolling Luggage

Do you know about the Disney Store R2-D2 suitcase  for $39.99? Well, let me tell you about it from the viewpoint of a 1st grader.
First, the coolest thing about this suitcase is that there is a button on the front and when I press it, it lights up and make robot sounds! AWESOME!!! Well, after that I am SOLD!!!  But, if you need more info  about the R2-D2 suitcase, let me tell you that it is a great carry on bag and fits under the seat on the airplane. Also, it was super easy and most importantly fun to roll around the airport... So I give this Awesome suitcase 2 thumbs up!!!

Happy camping :)

Chima Legos : The Ultimate Living Room Adventure

We love Legos! The brain power that it takes to build these things is phenomenal! It is simply amazing me to see a small child following the instruction book, page by page, with such determination and dedication until the construction is complete. AMAZING!
...and the story lines that are now available with the specialty pieces, has the kids wrapped up in a world of adventure that they can build in their own living room... keeping their hands and minds busy for hours.

They are recommended for ages 8-14, but my kindergartener is a Lego veteran and enjoys putting these sets together (plus, we know he will not put any of the pieces in his mouth... trust me, if we thought he would he would not have them)

The TV Show for Chima speaks of the power of sharing and community involvement and about what can happen when a world is divided... these large concepts are presented in a Lego adventure that will even have mom and dad asking, " What will happen next?"

Museums: The Denver Museum of Nature and Science

The Denver Nature and Science Center is a great place for your little one to explore nature through out time… with exhibits displaying large dinosaurs of prehistoric times (I mean what little explorer doesn’t like dinosaurs? and you can even talk to a real paleontologist !)

To their modern day ancestors like the powerful birds of prey…

There is a fantastic geology section where you can learn about the rocks that make up our world.

My little explorer really enjoyed the interactive displays where you can see the world through the eyes of a snake… COOL!

Walking and reading the signs with your little explorer will open their minds to big thoughts :o)

This museum also participates in the Blue Star Museums Program that offers large discounts and often free admission for military families from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Georgia Aquarium: an Underwater Adventure

The Froggy Heroes are out and about again! but this time we are traveling underwater in the Georgia Aquarium for a science lesson in marine biology.

Aquariums allow children to experience all the wonders of the ocean without even getting wet... well, you may get a little wet if you decide to touch a sting ray in the "water-petting zoos"...

The Georgia Aquarium is a world of marine biology in a controlled environment (my favorite kind when dealing with children)... and most of the staff can't wait to give you fascinating tidbits of information like how it is the home of the largest tank in the world... the size of a football field!

...and if you are over the age of 12 you can even set up an appointment to scuba dive in the tank! talk about field work!

Toy Review

We love brain-building toys! So we checked out a few that your little adventurer may be eyeing at the toy store.
the Ultimate Spy Watch by Spy Gear looked so cool! with its ability to decode secret messages, tell time in different time zones and stop watch capabilities!!!! Sounds Cool, Right?! ... but we could not get it to work :o(

Elenco EDU-37329 T-Rex Skeleton Kit is AWESOME!!!!!  It is 3 ft long when fully assembled! it looks like something right out of a real dinosaur museum... a must have for the dino-enthusiast!
The Smithsonian Microscope is a lightweight beginners microscope for the budding scientist. It comes with all the equipment needed to start micro-exploration... and we found it at Michael's 50% off :oD

The Sonic Sleuth is not just for ease dropping on your big sister's conversations... it can be a great tool for listening to all the little creatures on your afternoon nature walks...and this is really cool too!

Legos are the ultimate brain workout for any kid, it builds math skills, creativity and just may turn your kid into the biggest pint-sized architect on the playground.

Museums :The Cosmosphere

"Museums, how I love thee, let me count the ways..."
What better way to have an adventure than in a climate controlled, information saturated, visually stimulating museum?!

We took a Froggy Hero field trip to the Cosmosphere: Space and Science Museum. The kids were able to see and stand in real space equipment!
There was a rocket and launch pad outside that sparked the imagination of my little ones... who knows, there may be a budding astronaut in the house :oD

Astronauts:
There is more to being an astronaut than just walking on the moon. Some astronauts repair spacecrafts and equipment while others work on science experiments and study the stars. Math and Sciences like Chemistry (the study of matter), Meteorology (the study of weather)  and Geology (the study of rocks) are important for this job.

for more information check out NASA and look over their missions... they'er really cool!

Easy Science Projects for Kids : How plants absorb water

This is an oldie but goodie! ...and it will be new to your preschooler.

I showed my preschooler how plants take water up their stems through little tubes and deliver it all the way to the tips of the leaves with this easy project.
I just took and old jar and let him fill it with water about 3/4 of the way, then he added "A LOT" of food coloring and a stalk of celery.
... we started to see a slight change in just a few minutes...

... and the next day they had completely changed color. My preschooler loved it and it remained a centerpiece on the kitchen table for the rest of the week, and sparked many conversations about the science of plants :o)

LEGO Math

Is there anything more fun than creating something with your bare hands?...
How about learning while you do it!

From studying my son, I have seen the way that building blocks and Legos allow the imagination to soar... not to mention how they put math skills into use with looking for shapes and finding the right size piece to put into place... and let's not forget that sense of accomplishment your little one feels when they have finished their project and hold it up for you to see, "Mommy, look what I made!"

we are scheduling Lego time into our preschool school week :o)

Nature All Around

It is time for NATURE WALKS!

The weather is nice and the animals are up, so put on your walking shoes and explore the great outdoors. We enjoy going to the local nature center when it is still cool in the morning and heavily populated with quiet elderly strollers.

We like the fact that there is safety in numbers and that everyone is quiet enough not to scare the animals away. The kids get to see nature in action... a value educational experience.
...plus our nature center is free :oD

Little Green Thumbs

Gardening had never been so simple... or so GREEN!
We started an indoor herb garden in our kitchen window using recycled applesauce cups ( free), garden pellets ( $2.50 at Walmart) and of course... seeds ( prices will vary)  and we made little markers using toothpicks, paper, and clear tape.

We put the pellets in the cups and poured warm water over them, after they expanded we removed the net casing ( you don't have to do this but we wanted to see the roots grow), we stuck a finger in the middle, dropped in a few seeds and lightly cover them up. Then we set them in a sunny window and watered them regularly to keep the soil moist. In a about a week we saw sprouts and the kids where so excited!

***this is a great science project for your little one to teach them about recycling and the life cycle of plants :o)

Dino Dig in the Kitchen

Who knows what it feels like to have "Dino Crazy Kids" and live nowhere near an excavation site...?
Never fear, the Kitchen is here?

We made a mini excavation site right in the kitchen with a large plastic container that we filled with rice (but I think grits would have worked better... they look more like sand)  then I buried toy dinosaurs in the rice and gave the kids paint brushes and told them to discover the dinosaurs in the "dirt" ...

... they had a blast, I had to clean up a mess... but the looks on their faces was so worth it :oD

Discovery + Exploration  + Education = FUN

Tip:
This activity is also fun if you replace the toy dinosaurs with different sized uncooked pasta and after the kids dig up the "pasta dinosaur bones" they can create a "pasta dinosaur" on a piece of construction paper.

Making Dino Poop!

I was in the toy store and saw "Dinosaur Train Poop Kit" and thought, "Are they really selling poop to kids?" No! They are selling an awesome exploration and scientific experience. So you know we went home and made it.

Using this homemade Play Dough recipe:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of oil
  • 4 teaspoons of cream of tartar
  • Green, Blue Yellow, and Red food coloring
Mix all the ingredients in a large saucepan mixing until almost smooth, and add the food coloring until you get the color you want, I favored the green... and keep in mind that it will get darker when it is cooked.

Then cook it on the stove over medium heat, and stirring it the whole time, it will start to thicken, and you just keep stirring. Remove when it looks like play dough and allow to cool. Store in an air tight container.

We found some dinosaur skeleton toys at the Dollar Store, two in a pack! Then we wrapped them in the  play dough... plastic leaves would also work well if your dinosaur is a herbivore.

He has been hands deep in dinosaur poop all afternoon! :oD

Science Time: Cloud Watching

It was beautiful day today and there were wispy clouds floating in the sky so we decided to learn about clouds. What are clouds? A whole bunch of tiny water droplets that are so small they float in the air.

How are clouds made? When the sun heats up water on earth it turns into gas which floats up in the air and when the gas gets really high it started to cool off and turn into water droplets which group together to form clouds.

Types of Clouds:
  • cumulus : the puffy clouds that look like cotton balls
  • stratus: the big cloud blankets... when they are really close to the ground we call them fog
  • cirrus: wispy, stringy clouds
  • nimbus: clouds that have rain or snow falling from them.
Go outside and draw pictures of the clouds you see in your science notebook. Then see if you can name the different kinds of clouds.
